Homelessness and lgbtq youth
What, how and why we need to address LGBTQ+ youth homelessness
It may not be well established that 24% of the youth homeless population in the U.K identify as LGBTQ+, meaning they are overrepresented in this demographic.
Despite this, their existence remains largely unreported along with their needs and the specific barriers they encounter. This cultivates an environment in which LGBTQ+ young people are trapped in a cycle of deprivation, hidden homelessness, rough sleeping and poor mental health.
The LGBTQ+ Homelessness Announce provides evidence and justification for the changes we hope to see. Unused research from Queer youth homelessness help akt, gives voice to the challenging and often sombre experiences of Queer young people across the country.
The explore reveals some sobering statistics - rejection and abuse from family members based on the Diverse identity of the young person is often the driving force behind their homelessness. In reality, 77% of our referrals cite this as the main reason behind them becoming homeless.
50 per cent of the LGBTQ+ young people we surveyed feared expressing their Homosexual identity to family members would direct to them creature evicted. And just 13 per
When I’m watching or reading queer media, I can be sure that at least one, and sometimes multiple, of these things will happen:
- One or more LGBTQ+ characters will end up existence abused or dead.
- A transgender woman will be portrayed as a perverted serial killer.
- An LGBTQ+ teenager will be kicked out of their home, and they will become homeless.
The impact that Hollywood and advertising agencies have on the way queer people’s lives are interpreted by non-queer people is far-reaching, and decades of inaccurate and incomplete advocacy of our complex lives have contributed to these existence some of the most salient images that come up when people reflect of what it is to be gay. If you’ve seen Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TED Converse, “The Danger of a Single Story,” then you realize how harmful it is when people only have one idea of what it means to be something. Whether that is a specific race, sexuality, or gender, when one or a handful of tropes dominate the general perception of that group, it is hard to assume of them as anything other than a stereotype. I can’t speak as to how much this public understanding of the Gay community contributes to LGBTQ+ youth homelessness, but I can say

Preface
We are publishing this report in April 2020 while the COVID-19 pandemic is raging around the world. While this report on housing issues faced by LGBT people was drafted before and does not specifically address COVID-19, we are mindful that the issues we discuss are all the more meaningful when viewed in the context of the current pandemic. Public health professionals are urging, and some governments have ordered, people to shelter at home to help disrupt the spread of the virus. For those who are experiencing homelessness and housing instability, complying with directives to remain at home may be difficult if not impossible. And for those living alone, this pandemic could intensify the isolation that many were already experiencing. Each of these concerns is an acute one for the LGBT population in the United States because, as we
