Most of us agree that inclusion is important. However, we might be unsure how to activate this positive ideal in our daily professional practices. Where to begin when so much change and transformation seems needed? This week, we are excited to feature the Welcoming Guidelines that the LGBTQ Alliance, a professional network of the American Alliance of Museum (AAM), has been developing over the last couple years. These guidelines can certainly inform and facilitate facilitate action. Thank you to Renae Youngs for introducing Incluseum readers to these guidelines that include been gathered in this document.

CINCINNATI, OH (March 31, 2017) – National Underground Railroad Freedom Center Creative Director Jesse Kramer has been awarded an American Alliance of Museums (AAM) Fellowship for the AAM Annual Meeting & Museum Expo in St. Louis, Missouri, May 7-10, 2017. The AAM Fellowship Program is designed to nurture greater inclusivity—for the benefit of museums, museum professionals, and the diverse audiences they serve—by supporting the professional development of individuals from underrepresented or marginalized groups.
AAM has been bringing museums together since 1906, helping to evolve standards and finest practices, gathering and sharing knowledge, and providing advocacy on issues of worry to the entire museum community. Acting for more than 35,000 individual museum professionals and volunteers, institutions, and corporate partners serving the museum field, AAM stands for the broad scope of the museum
The “LGBTQ Welcoming Guidelines for Museums” outline preferred practices for museums to operate when working with LGBTQ professionals, audiences, and communities. The guidelines reflect our belief that museums are community anchors where visitors and staff should safely encounter and find sense in various cultures, objects, people, and ideas. Sexual orientation and gender culture are threads in the vibrant tapestry of any community. Museums benefit from interweaving or even emphasizing those threads, among many others, in our work.

Museums are places where we can all reach together to engage in discourse, raise awareness, express who we are, and belong as a collective. Being so, it is essential that museums rejoice, recognize, support, and welcome people of every sexual orientation and gender individuality, not only during June, but all year circular. Inclusion muse be embedded in every aspect of museum work – from staffing and signage to exhibitions and educational programs.
In honor of Pride Month, WMA is highlighting and providing easier access to the amazing LGBTQ+ resources that are out there to help museum professionals advocate for and advance inclusion with specific respect to LGBTQ+ communities, within their own institutions.

AAM LGBTQ Welcoming Guidelines Local Discussion
The American Alliance of Museums (AAM) in collaboration with COSI, the Columbus Museum of Art and the Ohio History Connection is presenting a local colleague discussion, AAM LGBTQ Welcoming Guidelines: Overview, Issues, and Actions,on November 9th from 1pm – 3pm at the Ohio History Connection and we invite you to join us for this vital conversation.
The goal of these local convenings is to aide museum colleagues excel understand how to use the Welcoming Guidelines and how they can be applied in all types of institutions. Participants will briefly discuss the goals of the Welcoming Guidelines, review the document, and labor through an train that is relevant to their institution. Participants are encouraged to download and read the LGBTQ Welcoming Guidelines for Museums prior to attending a local convening.
How Will I Benefit?
By participating in a local convening, attendees will be better proficient to:
- Understand and consider the LGBTQ Welcoming Guidelines
- Consider strategies for making your institution welcoming to LGBTQ staff and audiences
