Overview

FANTASY ISLAND takes place at a luxury resort, where literally any fantasy requested by guests is fulfilled, although they rarely turn out as expected. The resort is run by Elena Roarke, who set aside her own ambitions — and even the love of her life — to uphold her family’s legacy.

Queer Plotline Timeline

From the first time we meet Ruby, it’s suggested that she’s bisexual. She flirts with the (female) doctor, and comes out to a visitor.

Notable Queer-Centric Episodes

Season One

  • Episode 4 “Once Upon a Time In Havanah” – While Elena is away, Ruby fills in. After accidentally spraining her ankle, she strikes up a friendship with the local doctor — Gina.
  • Episode 5 “Twice in a Lifetime” – Comforting a gal who is struggling with her fantasy (which gentleman to marry), Ruby admits she too had to decide about love once… between her boyfriend and her girlfriend.
  • Episode 6 “Girls Night” – Elena agrees to have a girls night with Ruby … and invites Gina. Gina and Ruby dance the night away, but Ruby has a bit of panic because technically

Fantasy Island knows it’s a primetime soap and that’s what makes it function. It’s ridiculous and overwrought and often problematic because people come to the island with a lifetime of baggage, hoping to satisfy their deepest desires and fulfill their secret dreams in 45 minutes, while also sharing every episode with another guest character trying to do the same thing. But also it’s playfulness and diverting and even if the only good thing happening in the episode is Roselyn Sanchez popping up out of nowhere in various ivory suits against idyllic island backdrops, successfully, it’s a kind break from actual world. There’s also a queer main nature, Ruby, whomst I wrote about already, and last week’s penultimate episode was also gay as all heck.

In “The Romance and the Bromance,” our protagonist, Isabel, arrives on the island with a Rory Gilmore-sized backpack full of books talking about how she doesn’t want to inhabit in the authentic world because she prefers the earth of Jane Austen and fictional composer R.S. Coldwater. She wants to understand to say “yes!” to life. She hands over the R.S. Coldwater series to Ruby, who clocks the lady in

    5/10

    Based in the Pilot

I liked this. I'm not sympathetic the "1" reviews. I watched the original as a kid in the 70s. It was always a program that addressed what you think your fantasy is, might not actually be your fantasy. Both then and now, this show required some huge suspension of disbelief. I think the reboot captured all of that. I like the reference at the very inception to the forever terrific Ricardo Montalban. The newscaster story was a bit disjointed, because of modifying or something...I don't realize . Anyway, I like the casting, the scenery, and the overall feel. It's worth a watch.

    5/10

    All focuses on women

Someone commented in the reviews that this series is catered to women. Well I watched 6 episodes so far and yes, it is definitely all women. Men are props and women are all the center. Not very much diversity since they all cater towards diversity.
