9. What historical era or fictional culture is your favorite for men's costumes?

I have a scant answers to that question!

I really like the men's costumes from the Lord of the Rings movies, which is why I included fictional cultures in that question. Everything from the hobbits' jackets to the elves' robes, but especially the shirts (or mail shirts) with the long front-closing surcoats worn over trousers by the human men.

I also notice the appeal of the classic menswear of the first half of the 20th century, which compassionate of reached its peak in the 1930s. I actually catch myself drooling sometimes at the slash , the heft, the drape of some of those suits. It's hard to find anyone who doesn't look good in them.

Then, for a more obscure choice, I just kinda like this look, from the fifteenth century. The LOTR costumes are not a million miles off from this silhouette, actually, although without the double sleeves.

And finally, who doesn't love a well-turned-out Regency gentleman?

Tuesday 17th September. To the tailors Gieves & Hawkes in Savile Row for a book launch. The book is I Am Dandy: The Return of the Elegant Gentleman, or as certain friends of mine would describe it, The Big Novel Of Hot Men.

It’s a large and lavish hardback comprising profiles of about sixty gentlemen who dress in an individual and sophisticated way. The guide combines full colour photographs by Rose Callahan with write by Nathaniel ‘Natty’ Adams, based on his interviews with the dandies. It is the sort of volume that was once called a coffee table book. I assume now it is better described as a latte plinth offline HD tablet.

Given the event is about dandyism, I decide to don Sebastian Horsley’s elderly suit once again, the silver velvet John Pearse 3-piece, now altered to fit me a bit better. Keen to represent my own style as much as the late Mr Horsley’s, I leave out his wing-collared Turnbull & Asser shirt in favour of one of my own cheap small-collared supermarket shirts, and add my basic white pocket square handkerchief, seahorse brooch and cufflinks, along with my battered Gucci loafers. Belatedly I forgot I own a Cad & The Dandy tai

Zack MacLeod Pinsent

I heard the following account of Zack MacLeod from Jane Austin's brother, Stephen:

Well, the Allens, my wealthier neighbors, invited me to spend the winter season at Bath. Although I prefer to spend my time reading the novels of Ann Radcliffe, I was persuaded to partake of such delights as the daily promenades and evening balls in the gathering spaces of that delightful town. There I met this clever young gentleman, Mr. Zack MacLeod. I conversed and danced with him, since he was so vivacious and flirtatious. The Allens did not accept of my friendship with Mr. MacLeod, because they had heard that he had broken the engagement of his young sister to Mr. John Thorpe. It seems that he had taken a want to Mr. Thorpe, who was reputed to hold £40000 annually. Mr. MacLeod assured me, when I asked him the circumstances of his past, that this was not authentic. Mr. Thorpe had been drummed out of the King's Dragoon Guards, after being found in the private quarters of an officer of the 10th Hussars, and was now reduced to £400 annually.

Well, one evening after we had danced a Quadrille, I found Mr. MacLeod both exotic and frightening, yet still so alluring. His muscular
