Silence Equals Support?

In a 2012 article for Slate online, Will Oremus asked a provocative question: Was Jesus a homophobe?1

The article was occasioned by a story about a gay teenager in Ohio who was suing his high school after university officials prohibited him from wearing a T-shirt that said, “Jesus Is Not a Homophobe.”

Oremus was less concerned about the legal issues of the story than he was about the accuracy of the statement on the shirt. Oremus suggests that Jesus’s views on homosexuality were more inclusive than Paul’s. He writes,

While it’s logical to assume that Jesus and his fellow Jews in first-century Palestine would have disapproved of queer sex, there is no record of his ever having mentioned homosexuality, permit alone expressed particular revulsion about it. . . . Never in the Bible does Jesus himself offer an explicit prohibition of homosexuality.

Oremus seems to suggest that since Jesus never explicitly mentioned homosexuality, he must not possess been very concerned about it.

There are at least two reasons that we should be skeptical of this view.

Leviticus 18:22

“You shall not recline with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.”[1] It is not a surprise that this verse seems to say that homosexual male sex is forbidden in the eyes of God. The dominant view of western Christianity forbids same-sex relations. This verse is one of the clobber passages that people cite from the Bible to condemn homosexuality. This essay first looks at the various ways the verse is translated into the English Bible and then explores some of the strategies used to create an affirming understanding of what this route means for the LGBTQ community. More specifically, it presents the interpretation of K. Renato Lings in which Lev. 18:22 refers to male-on-male incest.

While Lev. 18:22 is used to condemn homosexuality, we must realize that the legal title “homosexuality” was only recently coined in the English language. So did this term exist in ancient Israel? Charles D. Myers, Jr. confirms that none of the prophets in the Hebrew Bible refer homosexuality.[2] He also contends that in ancient Israel same-sex relations were viewed as an ancient Proximate East problem. The ancient Near East tradition included pederasty and relations between an older man and

God and the Homosexual Christian Quotes

“The failure of reorientation therapy is why the "ex-gay" ministry Exodus International secure down in 2013. It places queer Christians who adhere to the traditional biblical interpretation in an agonizing, irresolvable tension. In direct to truly flee from sin as well as the temptation to sin, they must constantly attempt what has proven impossible: to reconstitute themselves so they are no longer sexual beings at all.”

“Neither Peter in his labor to include Gentiles in the church nor the abolitionists in their campaign against slavery argued that their encounter should take precedence over Scripture. But they both made the case that their experience should cause Christians to reconsider long-held interpretations of Scripture. Today, we are still responsible for testing our beliefs in light of their outcomes—a duty in line with Jesus's teaching about trees and their fruit.”

Gay Christian Quotes

“Even if you believe the Genesis record of creation you’ll see that God did not create a ebony and white world of male and female. Creation is not black and white, it is amazingly diverse, like a rainbow, including sexualities and a variety of non-heterosexual expressions of behaviour, affection and partnering occurring in most species, including humans. The ability to reproduce is only a small part of the creation. Before God created male and female he made an even more important statement; ‘it is not nice for mankind to be alone’. This is fundamental to all heterosexual and same-sex relationships. Lasting relationships are based on adoration, trust and commitment, not sex or reproduction. So stop with the ‘God created Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve’ quote already. It’s dull and an insult to the creator of this incredible universe.”

2. “If I wait for someone else to confirm my existence, it will mean that I’m shortchanging myself.” – Zanele Muholi
