One of the most interesting take-aways from that research and it’s follow-up More of What Women Want was the large amount of gay porn viewed by women. Not only execute women view a lot of queer woman porn, but the second most widespread category among women was gay porn featuring men. Our friends at Cosmopolitan asked the Pornhub statisticians to excavate a little deeper.

In our 2016 Year in Review we found that Pornhub’s proportion of female users had grown to 26% worldwide (from 24% in 2015). The gender split viewing same-sex attracted male porn is actually much higher at 37% female. Proportionately, that means women are 69% more likely to be viewing lgbtq+ porn than their male counterparts.

This was made abundantly clear earlier this year when TikTok user @kirahofficial posted a video with with the text: “When I realized gay male p**n turns me on more than straight p**n.”

When no one is looking, many women are watching gay porn

Back in 2015, the wildly popular online pornography site Pornhub — which boasts over 115 million daily views — published a finding that took sexuality researcher Lucy Neville by surprise: Women are responsible for more than a third of the site’s gay male porn views.

The finding planted the seed for what would eventually become a book, “Girls Who Favor Boys Who Like Boys,” which was published earlier this month. In it, Neville, a lecturer at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, investigates what women relax about consuming gay male erotica and how it fits in with their perceptions of gender and sexuality.

"They are definitely objectifying women and not treating them like people," Christina said of straight porn. "A lot of the time it seems prefer the women aren't actually enjoying it."

Neville interviewed and surveyed more than 500 women over five years for the project. Many of the women with whom she spoke said “a lot of the problem they have with heterosexual porn is that they focus on the female body" without paying enough attention to men.
