Gay Kansas City

Kansas Town lacks a unusual gay district, yet diverse queer communities thrive across this sprawling midwestern metro. Beyond the bars and clubs of Westport, LGBTQ KC flourishes in evolving neighbourhoods like Valentine and Midtown where rainbow flags wave proudly. The suburbs even elect openly queer leaders, while drag brunches, sports leagues and meetups build connection.

The city-wide Pridefest celebrates all colours of the rainbow. And while cruising still occurs, many opt for cuddling rescue dogs at laid-back patio bars like Exclude K. Kansas Metropolis rewards those who seek out its scattered gems of queer culture. Though often hidden, vibrant LGBTQ communities await discovery in every corner of KC.

While a unified homosexual village may be absent, Kansas Metropolis delivers an eclectic, welcoming version of Midwestern LGBTQ animation perfect for lgbtq+ travellers seeking queer-friendly havens off the beaten path.

Gay Kansas City

-------------------------------------

In the early 19th century, the Westport community of Kansas City was the trailhead for legendary destinations that included Santa Fe, California, and the Oregon Trail. Today, this historical district is now the center of the Kansas City gay community.

There are real cowboys here — lots of lgbtq+ folks from the Ozarks and the Texas Panhandle. Their stories can be vivid and heartbreaking a very different spin on gay life outside the usual urban metropolis. A great place to grab up with these cowpokes is at the Wyandotte County Fairgrounds, especially during the Missouri Gay Rodeo Association’s Show-Me State Rodeo over the Labor Night Weekend.

Cowboys aside, Kansas City also presents a surprisingly robust theater and cabaret scene, complementing a fine array of boogie halls, saloons, and edgy drag shows. The folks here have fun, and so will you.

Other dates on the LGBT calendar include: the Kansas City G&L Film & Video Festival screening throughout the year; Gay Movement KC festival beside the Missouri River in soon June; and the Bear Crossing weekend in August. The Kansas City FilmFest takes plac

Kansas City and the Soar of Gay Rights

How does change happen? How is history made?

We often mark the passage of time by headline-grabbing events like elections, uprisings, or the passing of legislation. But progress often comes from much less flashy, much more local sources.

This is particularly true about the history of America’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Many people associate the soar of LGBT rights with the widely reported uprising of gay youth at the Stonewall Riots in New York City in 1969. Yet the impact this event had on America’s gay rights movement was in many ways made possible by the hard work of women and men whose story is much less known—including several Kansas City residents.

Making History tells their story.

Built by students in the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s public history program, the exhibit explores the protest of gays and lesbians in the decades before Stonewall, including Kansas City’s surprisingly pivotal role in helping to launch America’s gay rights movement. Focusing
