In AI: The Somnium Files, Mizuki Okiura has a brief monologue response to an optional dialogue preference about the LGBT group. The monologue response can be seen here, where she talks very positively about the LGBT community.

This drew the ire of people online (seen in the comments of the YouTube video above, as well as the Twitter thread linked in the Reddit thread below), believing the game was forcing this dialogue and forcing a certain “agenda,” as well as claims that this may have only been added in localization. In a reddit thread, it was proved that this dialogue is the same in both the English and Japanese versions.

    That’s my interrogate, just found out about the game on Sankaku, looks interesting but the article also mentions a hidden lgbtq scene, promoting them all as the best thing since sliced bread -.-

    AI: The Somnium Files Maker Has Some Profound Thoughts on Gender Identity

    Zero Escape and AI: The Somnium Files journalist and director Kōtarō Uchikoshi took to Twitter recently with a bit of trivia about the gender identity of one of the minor characters in his latest game, AI: The Somnium Files – Nirvana Initiative.

    *Note: This article contains minor spoilers for AI: The Somnium Files – Nirvana Initiative.

    His unique tweet thread dives not only into the gender persona of Marco (an AI designed to help police solve crimes by diving into the minds of criminals and key witnesses), but also about the localization process and why certain choices were made as to how the character was referred to in English.

    Unsurprisingly, the conservative side of the game's fandom exploded. Some complaints were met with sarcastic humor.

    Others were met with a sincere outpouring of love in the face of hate.

    But the most interesting bit was when the conversation turned into a philosophical look at gender identity in general.

    Futa “Pewter” Amanoma and Renju Okiura in AI: The Somnium Files

    Futa Amanoma (known mostly as Pewter in-game) and Renju Okiura are two NPCs who are in a relationship during the game’s events. Pewter is a detective and scientist working with ABIS, also being the inventor of the Psync system. Renju is the President of Lemniscate and owner of Sunfish Pocket. He is also the ex-husband of Shoko Nadami, the first victim of the Modern Cyclops Serial Killings the game’s story centers around.

    Pewter and Renju’s relationship is revealed to players who play through multiple routes, as it is revealed that Renju’s partner gave him his watch (found here at 24:25), and it is revealed that Pewter is the one who gave him it (found here at 51:05). An additional scene has Pewter confirming it himself and saying that Renju was someone he loved (found here at 53:40).

    Because of this, we have classified Renju Okiura as Bisexual person Explicit and Futa “Pewter” Amanoma as Gay Explicit.
