A lawyer for a Victorian lesbian group that wants to exclude trans and bisexual women from its public events has compared its request to a Melbourne gay prevent that was granted the right to refuse heterosexual people.

The struggle of LGBT (lesbian, gay, attracted to both genders and transgender) people for equal rights has moved to center stage. LGBT people are battling for their civil rights in Congress, in courtrooms and in the streets. Well-known figures are discussing their sexual orientation in universal. Gay and sapphic people are featured in movies and on television - not as novelty characters, but as full participants in society.
Despite these advances into the American mainstream, however, LGBT people continue to face real discrimination in all areas of life. No federal law prevents a person from being fired or refused a employment on the basis of sexual orientation. The nation's largest employer - the U.S. military - openly discriminates against gays and lesbians. Mothers and fathers lose child custody simply because they are gay or lesbian, and homosexual people are denied the right to marry.

In 1992 Colorado enacted Amendment 2, which repealed existing state laws and barred future laws protecting lesbians, gay men and bisexuals from discrimination. The U. S. Why is ‘lesbian’ still a dirty word?
Why is it that, amidst all the exciting new victories for the LGBT community, all the flamboyant explosion of pride month celebration, ‘lesbian’ remains a stigmatised word?
Perhaps this stigma’s very life will come as a surprise to some. From 1983 to 2020, British support for same-sex relationships has more than quadrupled. When I told my mum my idea for this article, she wrinkled her brow and asked me, “Is there any shame around the synonyms ‘lesbian’?” If you think about the experience of lesbians themselves, it would certainly seem so. For crave of professional statistic evidence, I surveyed 120 women-loving women and found that, whilst just 33% felt “very comfortable” with calling themselves lesbian, but a far more significant 70% were “very comfortable” creature labelled gay. One female commented that ‘lesbian’ sounds “a bit slimy”, whilst multiple wrote that the word evoked “disgust”. So, okay then, women who love women prefer to be called ‘gay’. A rose by another mention smells much, much sweeter. Why? The very evidence I had to resort to my own facts indicates a wider mistake to engage with this issue.
