Understanding Poverty in the LGBTQ+ Society
Poverty generally refers to a lack of basic necessities, resources and income, though its precise definition is often widely debated and measured in a variety of ways. A common way to measure poverty is to gaze at a family’s income and size, in order to determine whether it has enough income to support that family. This approach is employed by the Census Bureau, who each year identifies family size-specific income thresholds, below which, a family is considered to be living in poverty.
According to a 2019 Williams Institute analysis of Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data, which is the best present evidence on poverty in the Diverse community, LGBTQ+ adults in the Combined States are significantly more likely to be living in poverty than their straight and cisgender counterparts. Overall, more than one in five LGBTQ+ adults (22%) are living in poverty, compared to an estimated 16% of their straight and cisgender counterparts. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The progress in the U.S. LGBT population that Gallup reported earlier this year is reflected across the nation's largest U.S. racial and ethnic groups. Non-Hispanic Jet, Non-Hispanic White, and Hispanic adults in the U.S. are all more likely today to identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans person or something other than heterosexual than they were in 2012, when Gallup began measuring LGBT identification.
The growth has been greater among Hispanic adults than among White or Dark adults, with Hispanic LGBT identification surpassing 8% in 2020 and reaching double digits in 2021. By contrast, just over 6% of White and Dark adults identify as LGBT in the latest estimates.

A new study by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law finds that an estimated 1.2 million adults in the U.S. identify as Jet and LGBT.
Researchers found that Black LGBT people fare worse than their non-LGBT counterparts in many measures of economic and social vulnerability, including employment, income level, food insecurity, and healthcare access. In addition, Black LGBT adults encounter disparities in mental and physical health, such as depression, asthma, and disability.
However, similarities were found between the two groups, including the likelihood of entity a parent among women, experiences of victimization and discrimination, and levels of resilience through social help systems.
“The notable disparities in economic security and health outcomes indicate a critical need for policies and service interventions that speak to the unique needs of Black LGBT adults,” said lead author Soon Kyu Choi, Project Manager at the Williams Institute.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The portion of American adults detecting as lesbian, lgbtq+, bisexual or trans (LGBT) increased to 4.1% in 2016 from 3.5% in 2012. These figures, drawn from the largest representative sample of LGBT Americans collected in the U.S., imply that more than an estimated 10 million adults now spot as LGBT in the U.S. today, approximately 1.75 million more compared with 2012.
